In Case of Emergency this summer - stay cool with ICE

As many of us head off on holiday, the last thing we want to think about is ending up in some form of emergency while we're away from home. While recent tragic events upon the beaches of Tunisia are far from the norm, it is worthwhile taking every possible precaution to ensure that loved ones can be contacted easily and quickly should you need someone to call them on your behalf.

We all carry our mobile phones with our names and numbers stored in the memory, and should we be involved in an accident or taken ill, we need to ensure that the people who attend us know exactly who you would wish them to call.

That's why you may have heard of the 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign, which has caught on quickly over the last few years and is an important method of contact during emergency situations. It's really quite easy to get involved - all you have to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted under the name 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by Bob Brotchie, a paramedic from Suffolk who had attended numerous accidents, found mobile phones with the patients but with no idea as to who to contact. By storing your emergency contact in your phone as 'ICE' you enable contact to be made with the right person - quickly and easily - so that they know precisely where you are and what's going on. It also saves valuable time for the emergency services too.

So - stop what you're doing right now, grab your phone and enter your emergency contact under 'ICE'! And while you're at it, get your friends and loved ones to do likewise too.

Angela's Top Tip: Most of us have a lock on our phones which require a password or pattern to gain access - so if you're going to use one of those, take a snapshot of your designated ICE phone number and display it as your lock screen wallpaper picture!
